COL. J. S. HUGHES, V.D.

After a short illness. Colonel John Silvester Hughes, V.D., Morfa Nevin, died at his London residence on Sunday night in his 66th year. He leaves a widow and one child (a son).

Deceased was a native of Machynlleth, and was for a time a pupil teacher at the Church School there, pro- ceeding afterwards to the office of the late Mr C. E. Spooner, civil engineer, and manager of the Festiniog Railway at Portmadoc. There he stayed until the death of Mr Spooner, whom he succeeded in the management of the railway, and retired from that office a few years ago. Marrying Miss Jones, of Morfa Nevin, he resided for a time at Garth. Portmadoc, and later he bought Llysalaw, where he lived until he built a house near the shore at Porthdinlleyn, Morfa Nevin. He also had a house in London, where he resided during the winter months.

During the time he resided at Portmadoc he was a most valuable member of St. John's Church, and helped the Church in various substantial ways. When the late Mr R. Casson commanded the old company of Portmadoc Volunteers, Mr Hughes joined as a lieutenant, and on the retirement of Capt. Casson he succeeded him in the captaincy, which he held for many years. He resigned with the rank of honorary colonel, and the War Office acknowledged his services by giving him the V. D. He was a justice of the peace for the county of Carnarvon.

THE FUNERAL.

The funeral took place at Morfa, Nevin on Wednesday, the body being brought from London on the preceding day. It was of a military character, a detachment of Territorials from Carnarvon, Pwllheli, and Portmadoc, with a section of the Naval Reserves from Porthdinlleyn, attending, and a Union Jack served as a pall, while on the coffin rested the deceased's helmet and sword.

The chief mourners were Mrs Hughes and her only son. The Revs. R. Cynfelin Jones, vicar of Nevin, and W. Walter Jones, curate of Portmadoc, officiated, and at the conclusion of the service the "Last Post" was sounded.
